Workshop/talk: Coping with academic stress
For ten years, I was a psychology researcher. I spent quite a lot of that time in a state of high stress and anxiety, and towards the end of my time in academia I was often crying at my desk. The source of that stress was often overwork and other systemic problems in academia, but I also didn’t know what I could do to cope.
Fortunately, that time in academia also gave me the skills to create this workshop. I’ve read a lot of scientific research on how people cope with stress, and I’m ready to share that with you so that you can find ways to stay emotionally OK in the face of stressors like peer reviews, job interviews and grant applications. These tools can be used to cope with other kinds of stressor too - from waiting for medical tests to getting ready to move house.
In this session, you’ll learn:
What aspects of a situation can cause stress
Why each of us responds differently to stressors
Lots of concrete actions you can take to help you cope
This session can be delivered in 60 minutes or 90 minutes - see below for details.
